Hoosier Lottery Player Claims Indiana’s 40th Powerball Jackpot
The Powerball player from Indiana who won $71.7 million in the extraordinary draw on April 29 has come forward to claim their prize, taking the money as a cash lump sum.
The jackpot had climbed to $143.4 million after just three weeks without a winner, but when the numbers were revealed to be 3, 19, 35, 51 and 67, with a Powerball of 15, it generated a remarkable set of payouts.
Two players matched all the numbers to split the jackpot, while 89 other ticket holders became millionaires. The high number of winners was put down to the way that playslips are printed in some states, with all five main winning numbers displayed in one vertical line.
That is exactly how the winner from Indiana decided on her numbers, as it gave her a quick way to mark the playslip when she bought a ticket from Al’s Supermarket, located at 702 E. Lincolnway in La Porte.
She claimed the prize as an LLC so her name has not been disclosed, but the Hoosier Lottery revealed a few other details about her story in a press release to confirm the winner had come forward to the payment office in Indianapolis. It also makes Indiana the first state to reach 40 jackpot wins.
Indiana Still Making History
”Indiana’s connection to Powerball began with the game’s very first jackpot winner in 1992 and more than three decades later, we’re still making history,” said Hoosier Lottery Executive Director Sarah M. Taylor. “The April 29 drawing produced our record-setting 40th Powerball jackpot winner, along with 19 additional millionaires. With this claim, we’ve had the privilege of celebrating each Champion of Play and closing out Indiana’s Millionaire Moment.”

The winner described herself as ‘numb’ when she realized she had won the jackpot. “I was just speechless, in disbelief,” she added.
Having initially forgotten about the Powerball draw, she finally got round to checking her tickets a few days later while she was sitting in her car on the driveway. The first ticket she pulled out of her purse flew out of the open window, but before she could retrieve it she noticed that the numbers on the next ticket still in her hand looked like the winning line. She took a moment to check the numbers more carefully and that’s when she discovered she was a multimillionaire. The ticket that flew out the window was completely forgotten.
The winner’s lump sum cash payout was $32,603,357. She plans to invest most of the money, as well as go to more Chicago Bears games next season and finally go on her dream vacation to Alaska. She has not yet decided whether to keep working or retire.
After all those big winners on April 29, and two more jackpot winners on May 2, nobody has landed the top prize for the last two months. The jackpot is up to $396 million ahead of the next draw on Saturday, and you can purchase tickets from participating states across the U.S.
