91 Millionaires Emerge in April Powerball Drawing

91 Millionaires Emerge in April Powerball Drawing

Wednesday April 29th saw one of the most remarkable Powerball jackpot events of all time, with as many as 91 winners turning into overnight millionaires.

This is the first time this has happened in over 20 years, since 110 lottery players won in the famous ‘fortune cookie’ drawing in 2005. This previous lottery event was so outrageous in terms of the number of winners it produced that lottery officials suspected players cheating the system. Now, the 2026 drawing is creating similar suspicious waves. Regardless, the country-wide victories are legitimate.

So, What Happened?

April 29th’s Powerball drawing unveiled numbers 3, 19, 35, 51, 67, and Powerball 15. Before this, the jackpot had risen to the relatively low amount of $143 million (cash value $65.2 million). This is modest for Powerball jackpots, especially when you compare it to the gargantuan numbers it has hit in the past. But sometimes smaller packages can be surprising.

Two players won the main jackpot by matching all five main numbers plus the Powerball. The two jackpot winners will each get $71.7 million before taxes if they opt for annuity. Alternatively, they can choose the lump sum option for a sum of $32.6 million, which gets them less money in total but more immediately.

The jackpot winners bought their tickets in Indiana and Kansas. Chances are, we will not find out much about the Kansas winner since the Sunflower State is very open to anonymity. Indiana, however, considers the names of lottery winners to be a matter of public record. So watch this space.

The Second Prize Tier

The other 89 winners include 62 ticket-holders that will be awarded $1 million each once they make their claim, and 27 winners who paid the extra dollar for Power Play, meaning they will each get doubled prizes of $2 million each.

The states where these wins took place are notable, since 19 of the 89 wins go to Indiana. 18 of them are credited to New Jersey players, and 11 of them to Louisiana ticket-holders.

There were 6 further winners in the third tier (Match 4 + Powerball), awarding them $50,000 each. 2 other winners had Power Play checked, doubling their Tier 3 prizes to $100,000.

How Did This Happen?

There is no clear explanation as to why this extraordinary Powerball victory happened for so many players. Only the numbers themselves. They are spread apart evenly with gaps of 16, with 35 being the number exactly in the middle of 1 to 69. We can account for the New Jersey winners too, as their playslip features all of the main winning numbers in one vertical line, meaning that one downward stroke with a biro (ensuring all number boxes are marked clearly) would provide the winning numbers to the ticket-holder.

Psychologically, this makes sense, since players are generally more likely to select numbers evenly spread apart. Though, this taps more into human psychology than drawing odds. It happens that this number selection aligns with it this time. That doesn’t make it any more likely to happen again any time soon. Always remember that numbers 1,2, 3, 4, 5 are just as likely to be drawn as any other  combination.
