Powerball Jackpot is Eighth-Largest in History
The Powerball jackpot has soared to an estimated $856 million ahead of the next draw on Saturday evening, setting up the chance for someone to win the game’s eighth-biggest prize.
Nobody has matched all the numbers since May 2, when there were two winners of a $20 million jackpot. Remarkably, there had also been two winners in the previous draw on April 29, when ticket holders from Kansas and Indiana split $143 million.
The run of 41 drawings without a winner has pushed the top prize into the all-time top 10, and the rate of growth is accelerating as the $1 billion barrier approaches.
A jackpot of $794.3 million had been up for grabs in the latest draw on Wednesday night, but again it proved to be out of reach and the advertised amount for the weekend has jumped up by more than $60 million.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s draw, Stephen Durrell, Powerball Product Group Chair and Kansas Lottery Executive Director, said: “The last time we saw a Powerball jackpot of this size was on Christmas Eve, with a $1.817 billion prize on the line. But throughout the past year, we’ve had five Powerball jackpots won by players in seven different states, which goes to show a winning $2 ticket can be sold anywhere.”
While the jackpot has rolled throughout the summer so far, 36 players have won in the Match 5 prize tier in that same time, including a $1 million payout for an Ohio player in the latest draw. Hundreds of thousands of prizes are given away in every draw, while sometimes the total number of winners can exceed 1 million.
Could A New Record Be Set?
As huge as the current jackpot is, it is still not even half as high as the record for the largest payout in Powerball history. That stands at $2.04 billion and went to Edwin Castro from California in November 2022.
California has been the scene of several of the game’s biggest wins, although Indiana still ranks as the most successful state with 40 jackpot wins since Powerball began in 1992. A number of participating jurisdictions - and new arrival the United Kingdom - have yet to register a jackpot winner.
It remains to be seen where the current jackpot lands, or whether it goes on to break the record, but the top prize is sure to climb faster and faster until someone hits all the winning numbers.
