Powerball Players Set to Miss Out on Unclaimed Prizes

Powerball Players Set to Miss Out on Unclaimed Prizes

Three Maryland Powerball players could miss out on prizes worth $50,000 each in February if they don’t make contact with lottery officials soon. Ticket holders in the Old Line State have 182 days to pick up awards from games like Powerball and Mega Millions, and those 182 days are up for the trio of participants next month.

Unclaimed Maryland Prizes

The unclaimed Maryland prizes are all from drawings in August of last year, on tickets that matched four main numbers plus the Powerball. Here are the full details:

  • A ticket for the draw on August 5th, where the winning numbers were 11, 21, 28, 33, 45 and Powerball 11. It was bought at Glen Burnie Mobil station, just south of Baltimore, and expires on Friday February 2nd.
  • An entry for the drawing on August 12th, when the winning line was 20, 24, 26, 35, 49 and Powerball 19. The purchase was made at Wegman’s grocery store in Frederick, home of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. It expires on Friday February 9th.
  • A ticket for August 19th’s drawing, which featured the numbers  17, 19, 39, 43, 68 and Powerball 13. The slip was sold by the Giant grocery store in Catonsville, near the Patapsco Valley State Park, and expires on Friday February 16th.

If you have one of the winning tickets, you must take the slip, along with relevant identification documents, to the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore.

Powerball Prize Claim Periods

Claims periods vary for Powerball prizes, depending on where you play. New Mexico has the shortest timeframe in which to claim, at 90 days. At the other end of the scale, a number of states offer players a window of a year, including Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania. Californian jackpot winners have a year to make contact with lottery officials, but there is a limit of six months for all other prizes.

The How to Claim page lets you know how long you have in each participating Powerball state, and you can also find out how the claims process changes depending on how much you win.

Biggest Unclaimed Prizes

It is very rare that a Powerball jackpot goes unclaimed, but it has happened. Most recently, a $50 million award in Florida from the draw on May 25th 2013 expired without the owner of the ticket coming forward. In addition, a $77.1 million jackpot on June 29th 2011 came and went without a claim in Georgia.

Powerball Jackpot

Powerball returns on Wednesday night with a $127 million jackpot on offer. You can buy tickets at authorized retailers, but remember to keep them safe as you may need them to claim a huge prize!
