Kentucky Celebrates Its Biggest-Ever Powerball Jackpot Win

A lucky ticket holder from Kentucky broke the record for the biggest Powerball jackpot won in the state on Saturday night, snapping up a prize worth $167.3 million.

It is the third Powerball jackpot to have been won already this year, following on from the $328.5 million payout to an Oregon player on January 18 and the $526.5 million Californian win on March 29.

The jackpot had quickly surged past $150 million over the past few weeks, but it was stopped from going any higher on Saturday evening as someone matched all the winning numbers - 1, 12, 14, 18 and 69, plus the Powerball of 2.

More than 510,000 other prizes below the jackpot were paid out across the U.S. Go to the Powerball Numbers page for April 26 to find a full breakdown. You can also search for the number of winners in each state.

Kentucky’s 19th Win

The Kentucky Lottery revealed after the draw that the jackpot-winning ticket was sold at Clark’s Pump N Shop on Connector Road in Georgetown. The cash value of the prize was $77.3 million, so the winner faces a decision over whether to take it as an annuity or a lump sum.

Kentucky has now had 19 jackpot wins - placing it joint-fifth among all the participating states - and Saturday’s success was the largest of the lot. It surpassed the $128.6 million jackpot sold in December 2009, also at a Georgetown retailer. It is also the first time since 2010 that a Powerball jackpot has been won in the Bluegrass State.

“This is truly another historic moment for the Kentucky Lottery, our retailers and more importantly our players,” said the Kentucky Lottery in a statement.

“We advise the winner to sign the back of their ticket and keep it in a secure location. For a prize of this magnitude, we also encourage the ticket holder to seek financial and legal advice before claiming the $167.3 million Powerball jackpot. The winning ticket holder can claim their prize within 180 days from the date of the drawing."

The Powerball jackpot will now start again at $20 million in Monday night’s draw. It could be won again in the next few weeks to keep the feelgood run going, or perhaps this time it will carry on growing for a couple of months and potentially go close to the billion-dollar mark for the first time this year. Grab your tickets now and keep an eye out for the winning numbers as soon as they are available.
