New York Keeps Up Winning Run With $80 Million Powerball Jackpot

New York Keeps Up Winning Run With $80 Million Powerball Jackpot

The Powerball jackpot has been won in New York for the second time in the space of two and a half weeks, with one lucky ticket holder landing $80 million in the latest drawing on Wednesday September 4th.

Only four drawings had passed since the last winner on Saturday August 17th, but the top prize had already begun to charge towards nine figures. Once again, though, it was stopped in its tracks by a single player from New York. They matched the winning numbers 4, 8, 30, 52 and 59, plus the Powerball of 2.

The winner played a Quick Pick rather than choosing their own numbers. They bought their entry just outside Buffalo at the Tops Market on Erie Road in Derby. They now have one year from the date of the drawing to come forward and claim the money.

A key decision facing the winner will be whether to take the full jackpot as an annuity, paid out in 30 instalments over the course of 29 years, or a one-off cash payout. The cash option is worth around $57.3 million. Whichever option they decide, the prize is subject to tax, and New York has the highest rate of withholding of any state in the U.S.

Power Play Makes It A Night Of Big Winners

As well as the jackpot winner, there were over 400,000 other prizes given away in Wednesday’s drawing. The second-biggest winner was a player from Virginia who matched all five white balls to claim a $1 million prize, but it was also a special night for any player who won a Power Play prize.

The Power Play multiplier was 10x, increasing the payouts from the third category downwards by ten times. Two ticket holders, for example, won $500,000 each after matching four main numbers plus the Powerball. If they hadn’t added the Power Play option to their ticket, the payout would have been €50,000. Even those players who matched the Powerball and no other numbers won $40 each if they added Power Play.

Remarkably, it was the second time in three drawings that the 10x multiplier had been randomly selected, having also appeared on Wednesday August 28th. Before that, the 10x multiplier had not come out since January 2018. Go to the Prizes page to find out more about Power Play and the odds of each multiplier being selected.

New York’s 11th Jackpot Win

New York has now had 11 jackpot winners since the state joined Powerball in 2010. Two of those have come in the last month, after a ticket bought in Long Island won $148 million on August 17th.

There were three winners from the Empire State in 2018, including Robert Bailey, who won half of a $687 million jackpot to become New York’s biggest winner of all time.

The jackpot for the next drawing will be worth $40 million, giving players from all participating states another chance to land a stunning prize.
