$148 Million Powerball Jackpot Won in New York

$148 Million Powerball Jackpot Won in New York

A single ticket from New York matched all the winning numbers in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, netting the lucky player $148 million. The jackpot had not previously been won since July 13th.

The numbers for Saturday August 17th were 18, 21, 24, 30 and 60, with Powerball 20. There were 590,521 winners in total across all the participating states, but only one participant managed to land the grand prize.

It was quickly announced that the winner had come from New York, with the state’s lottery later confirming the ticket was sold at Merrick Gas & Repair in Long Island. The winning entry was a Quick Pick, meaning it was a set of numbers that was generated at random by the terminal.

What The Winner Must Do Now

The winner now has one year to claim their money, and the New York Lottery has urged anyone who bought a ticket from the gas station on Long Island to check their numbers. Even if you would not wish to come forward straight away to receive your winnings, it is always a good idea to sign the back of your ticket so that a prize could not be claimed by someone else.

Another decision facing the winner will be whether to take the full jackpot amount as an annuity or choose the cash option of just over $105 million. There is no avoiding tax whichever option they take, and New York has the highest tax rate of any participating state at 8.82 percent, in addition to the federal withholding.

The winner will not be able to remain anonymous, as state law dictates that the New York Lottery must disclose details that are regarded as ‘public information’ such as their name and city of residence.

New York Powerball Winners

The last jackpot winner from New York was Brooklyn truck driver David Johnson, who claimed $298 million just after Christmas last year. He quit his job immediately and revealed that he would be trading in his truck for a red Porsche.

There were three jackpots won in the Empire State in 2018 and the latest success on Saturday was New York’s tenth big win since Powerball tickets went on sale in the state in 2010. Check out the Winners page for a list of jackpot winners from each location.

It had been Tennessee’s turn to shine the last time the jackpot was won in July and it took the winner three weeks to claim their $198 million. Keep checking back on Powerball.net for more news of the latest win, as the jackpot now resets to $40 million for the next draw.
