Christmas Surprise for Iowa Powerball Ticket Holder
Karen Harger of Glenwood, Iowa, received an early Christmas present when she discovered she had been holding a $1 million Powerball ticket for a drawing that took place more than six weeks ago. Karen, a retired American Red Cross worker, won the Match 5 prize in the drawing on November 4th, but only checked her ticket last week. She and her husband Jim, a retired engineer, claimed the Powerball prize on Monday, according to lottery officials.
Where was the winning ticket sold?
The couple bought the winning Match 5 ticket at Casey’s convenience store at 701 32nd Avenue in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Karen was running errands and, despite usually picking her own numbers, she told reporters that on this occasion she went for a Quick Pick.
Karen’s ticket wasn’t the only Match 5 winner on the night of the drawing, with a player from Florida also landing the $1 million prize. The store where Karen purchased the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 vendor’s bonus.
How will the couple spend the Powerball winnings?
Karen and Jim plan on using the winnings to contribute towards college fees for their four grandchildren, as well as redecorating their home and investing for their retirement. Jim also said that he would like a new wood-burning stove.
Iowa Winners
Since Powerball launched in 1992, Iowa has created eight jackpot winners, and 2017 has seen four residents of the Hawkeye State pick up Powerball prizes worth $1 million or more.
Recently, two Iowans come forward to collect Powerball prizes of $50,000 and $100,000. Barbara Yeisley of Central City carried a $50,000 Powerball ticket in her purse for five months before realising she was due a payout. Edna Whetstone from Clive City gave up her regular ‘lucky’ numbers and decided to opt for the Quick Pick ticket that made her $100,000 richer in the drawing on September 2nd.
