The UK will be looking to join the list of biggest winners as soon as it starts selling tickets. Hopefully it can avoid the current fate of Wyoming, U.S Virgin Islands, North Dakota, Mississippi and Maine who have all managed to go their entire Powerball history without a jackpot win..

Until then, take a look at some of the biggest winners in the USA below, and a full map of the number of jackpot winners by state. Lets hope we see the UK on there soon!

Lottery Winner The most recent Powerball jackpot was won on Monday, April 6, 2026.

There was 1 jackpot winning ticket. The ticket was purchased in Delaware.

£1.8 billion 7th November 2022 Edwin Castro of California holds the record for the biggest every jackpot win at $2.04 billion, or the equivalent of £1.8 billion. Mr Castro took the cash option of $997 million (£884 million) and immediately became a celebrity in the USA due to his huge win and the surrounding media circus following the record setting Powerball draw. There was so much demand for the draw that the winning ticket wasn’t announced for 10 hours after the draw took place so that lottery officials could check all the tickets that were entered. Although fame found Mr Castro anyway, he has declined any major media opportunities in an effort to remain as private as a new-found billionaire can! £1,800,000,000
£1.611 billion 24th December 2025 It was 46 consecutive draws without a winner in 2025 that gave us the second biggest ever jackpot win that came on Christmas Eve no less. Had it rolled once more then it likely would have set new records, but instead it was a single ticket in Arkansas that walked away as the winner. It’s the states second jackpot win, and sadly we will never know the winners identity as they took the cash lump sum of $834 million (£740 million) and decided to remain anonymous. £1,611,000,000
£1.585 billion 6th September 2025 2025 was a busy year as there were other huge winners in September when a $1.787 billion jackpot (£1.585 billion) was won by players in Missouri and Texas. Both winners chose the lump sum amount of $410 million (£363 million). The Missouri winner, who was the 32nd jackpot winner (!) in the states history , stayed anonymous, whilst the Texas win was claimed by the Seven Bridges Revocable trust. £1,585,000,000
£1.561 billion 11th October 2023 It was the second billion dollar jackpot of 2023 that takes the fourth spot when a single ticket in California took home $1.76 billion (£1.561 billion). The winner took their time coming forward to claim the prize five months later, that was represented by Theodorus Struyck. £1,561,000,000
£1.419 billion 13th January 2016 The January 2016 jackpot goes down in history as the first time a lottery jackpot over $1 billion was won. The jackpot run caused chaos at ticket retailers in the USA, with lines out the door and round the block becoming the norm and players driving from state to state to secure their tickets. Eventually the jackpot was won by three tickets from California, Florida and Tennessee. John and Lisa Robinson from Tennessee were first to claim their prize, followed by David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith in Florida, and finally Marvin and Mae Acosta in California a few months later. £1,419,000,000
