Powerball Double Play to Boost Kansas Winning Odds by 96%

The Powerball Jackpot has finally been won, but the excitement is far from over – especially for Kansans. September 22 brings Double Play to lottery players who buy their tickets in the Sunflower State, giving them a 96% higher chance of winning. The top cash prize in the second draw is $10 million.

What is Powerball Double Play?

Double Play is an add-on option that gives lottery players an extra draw for an extra $1. Taking place immediately after the main Powerball jackpot drawing, the second drawing dispenses a fresh set of white balls and a new Powerball.

Double Play is only available in certain states. These are Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Indiana (Hoosier), Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, U.S. Virgin Islands and Washington.

And now Kansas can be added to the list.

Double Play Boosts the Odds by 96%

Double Play is not mandatory, and so if you don’t wish to mess around with the big draw, that’s your call. But it’s worth knowing that Double Play ups lottery players’ chances of winning any prize by 96%. Want to know how that works? You simply have to do the math.

The Math

The Powerball officials tell us that the odds of winning any prize in Powerball are 1 in 24.87 – bear in mind that’s any prize, not just the big ones. That means a 4.02% chance of winning and a 95.98% chance of not winning.

But when you get two independent chances using the same numbers, the chance of not winning drops to 92.12%, meaning that your odds have gone from a 4.02% chance of winning to a 7.88% chance of winning. In short, your odds have technically shot up by 96%.

Prize Breakdowns

If that excites you, you should investigate the prize breakdowns for adding the Double Play option to your ticket starting September 22.

Winning Numbers Prizes
Five white balls and the Powerball $10 million
Five white balls $500,000
Four white balls and the Powerball $50,000
Four white balls $500
Three white balls and the Powerball $500
Three white balls $20
Two white balls and the Powerball $20
One white ball and the Powerball $10
Powerball $7

Multi-Draw Changes

As a result of this change, Kansas lottery players will have fewer multi-draw options for the time being. Leading up to the September 22 date, the state’s lottery officials will be funneling their resources into preparations for this upcoming change. Once the transition is complete players will be able to buy up to 15 advance drawings as per usual.
