$1.787 Billion Powerball Jackpot Won in Missouri and Texas

The astonishing Powerball jackpot run has finally been brought to a close, as two phenomenally lucky ticket holders split the prize. Although the $2.04 billion record still stands, this is actually the longest Powerball jackpot run since the game launched in 1992, at 41 draws.

What do we know about the win?

The draw was held, as scheduled, at 10:59 PM (Eastern Time) and the winning numbers were 11, 23, 44, 61 and 62 with a Powerball of 17, and a 2X Power Play.

One of the winning entries was purchased in Missouri, and the other in Texas. However, we're always hesitant to say that the winner was actually *from* those states. After all, they could have been visiting, passing through, or living near the border.

The owners of the winning tickets will remain a mystery until they come forward to make their claims. For such a big win, they may choose to leave it weeks or even months to get their affairs in order before claiming, which isn't too uncommon.

The winners will actually end up taking home different amounts, since there is no state tax on lottery prizes in Texas, but there’s a 4% withholding in Missouri. There’s also federal taxes, whether the winners decide to go with the annuity payments or the one-time lump sum. Each winner’s share of the jackpot is worth $893.7 million before taxes, or $410.3 million if they take the cash option.

What happens next?

The Powerball jackpot will be reset to the minimum/starting jackpot of $20 million, and the game will continue as normal. Since the winning tickets were purchased in Missouri and Texas, the winners both have 180 days to come forward and claim their prizes before the tickets expire (can you imagine that?).

It's not a total anti-climax though, as there will be a lot of media buzz around the big win, and the increased ticket sales caused by the high jackpot will have generated tremendous sums of money for good causes across the US. Keep an eye on your state lottery's news page, as they're likely to mention how much was raised and how it's going to make a difference in your state.

$20,000,000 is still a crazy amount of money to win, truly life-changing, so don't sleep on Powerball just because the big jackpot has been won! In many states, it's possible to get Powerball tickets online nowadays - head over to the Tickets Page to find out more.
