Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $1.73 Billion

While many were expecting for the Powerball jackpot to be won, the prize rolled over again and spiked to $1.73 billion. This is the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history.

The estimated jackpot for the next draw on Wednesday night reached an estimated $1.73 billion as no one matched all six numbers on Monday, October 9. The winning white balls were 16, 34, 46, 55, 67, with the red Powerball being 14. The Power Play multiplier was 3X.

Nevertheless, the drawing brought prizes to more than 3.7 million players across all states. Four tickets were very close to winning the jackpot, but they only matched all five white balls. Not too bad though as each of them won $1 million. The winning tickets were sold in California, Indiana, Oregon, and Virginia.

One lucky ticket bought in Florida matched five numbers and increased the prize from $1 million to $2 million because the player added the Power Play option.

The next draw will take place on Wednesday and it will be the 36th draw since the last winner. The last time the Powerball jackpot was won was on July 19, when a single ticket brought a $1.08 billion jackpot to a Californian player (or more).

In case the jackpot is won on Wednesday night, the lucky player will have to choose between the annuity option of an estimated $1.73 billion or a lump sum payment of approximately $756.6 million, before taxes.

The cash option is popular amongst Powerball jackpot winners, however the annuity one has its benefits too. Check out our Cash vs Annuity page in order to find out the differences between the two. If the winner or winners want the cash option, they will have to claim it within 60 days from the date of the winning draw, otherwise they will get paid the annuity by default. The general claiming period is different in each state and can vary from 90 days to one year. For more details about claiming a jackpot in different states, you can explore the How to Claim Powerball Winnings page.
