Record in the Making? Powerball Jackpot Bumped Up to $1.5 Billion

Big Wins Regardless!
The winning Powerball numbers for Wednesday, December 17, were 25-33-53-62-66, with a Powerball of 17. Although nobody managed to win the jackpot, it's been an incredible draw for runner-up prizes, with eight players claiming the second-place prize.
A player each in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, plus three New York tickets managed to claim the $1 million prize. Meanwhile, two players in Arizona and Massachusetts won using the Power Play multiplier, doubling their prizes to $2 million!
The Power Play multiplier was a respectable 4X for Wednesday's draw, the second-highest multiplier available; the odds of a 4X multiplier being drawn are just 1 in 14. As a result, a lot of Power Players' prizes were boosted far higher than usual.
Records Being Set
The jackpot for the next draw is estimated at $1.5 billion, making it the 5th biggest Powerball jackpot in history, should it be won. While the odds of winning never change, higher ticket sales during big jackpot rollovers make it more likely that someone will win.
Once the jackpot crosses the billion-dollar threshold, ticket sales ramp up, drastically increasing the rollover amount. For example, the jackpot between last draw and the next is increasing by an estimated $250 million. For comparison, Powerball starting jackpot is $20 million, and rolled up by just $15.4 million on the first draw of the current jackpot run.
This Powerball run is currently setting a new record for the most roll-overs. The previous record of 41 was set earlier this year, but the present run is at 44 consecutive draws without a jackpot win.
