Powerball Jackpot Passes $500 Million After Rapid Rise

The Powerball jackpot has surged beyond the half-a-billion-dollar mark after nobody matched all the numbers on Wednesday night. Find out more about this gigantic prize, including why it might have hit the latest milestone quicker than it has done in recent times.

The last time the jackpot was won was on August 12, when a ticket holder from Illinois pocketed a colossal $1.04 billion. The lucky winner came forward a few weeks later, describing the ‘overwhelming elation’ they felt when they claimed the money anonymously.

A number of players have come close to snapping up the jackpot over the past couple of months, but it has stayed just out of reach. The winning line for Wednesday, October 7, was 11, 13, 14, 21 and 65, with a Powerball of 19. Go to the Payouts page to see a breakdown of all the prizes that were won in the draw - you can even view the number of winners for each state!

The jackpot for the next draw will now climb from $484.8 million to an estimated $516 million, with a cash option of $212.6 million. It is the second-largest jackpot of the year after the $1 billion payout in August.

Why the Jackpot May Be Climbing Faster

The next draw will be the 25th of the current jackpot run, and the rate of growth is only likely to accelerate until there is a winner.

It has been a rapid rise since the jackpot last reset to its starting amount at $20 million. As a comparison, it took 29 draws to go past $500 million when there was a long run at a similar time of year in 2025 - between September and December. It is around $80 million higher now than it was after an equivalent period of time last year.

So why might the jackpot be building so quickly? One reason is the UK’s arrival in the game earlier this summer. It was the first time that Powerball had expanded to an international market, and lottery bosses predicted that it would result in the ‘jackpot velocity’ (the speed at which it grows after a rollover) increasing by around 15-20%. At present that seems to be accurate.

The UK has a population of around 70 million people, and Powerball has proved to be a popular addition in a country of lottery fans. While the UK version of the game works slightly differently, they still contribute to the shared jackpot and the cost to play is £4 (that’s more than $5) per line.

There may be other factors at play too. For example, the Mega Millions jackpot was relatively low at the start of the current jackpot run, so Powerball would probably remain the preferred choice for many participants who only want to take part in one of the two big multi-state games. When the Mega Millions jackpot is significantly higher than the Powerball jackpot, it can take away players who are more interested in a bigger jackpot.

At its current rate, the Powerball jackpot is on track to reach $1 billion sometime in mid-November. Keep an eye on the Powerball Numbers page after every draw to see if it gets won before it hits 10 figures, and don’t forget to take part for your chance to win.
