Powerball Jackpot Increases to $750 Million

There were no jackpot winners yet again in the Powerball drawing on Wednesday 24th October, meaning that the top prize has now grown to an estimated $750 million for the next draw on Saturday. If won, it would be the third-highest Powerball jackpot ever awarded, and the fourth-biggest lottery prize in the world.

Winning Numbers From Wednesday October 24th

The winning numbers from Wednesday’s drawing were 3, 21, 45, 53, and 56, with Powerball 22. No one managed to match all the numbers to win the jackpot, but seven players did match the five main numbers to win $1 million, although none of them added the Powerplay to their ticket to increase the prize further. See the Numbers page for a full prize breakdown.

The jackpot of $750 million has now not been won for 21 consecutive draws, dating back to August 15th 2018. It was last won on August 11th, when Nandlall Mangal, a carpenter from Staten Island, New York, won $245 million. He said it took him a week to check his ticket, but he eventually came forward to claim the prize under the Sand & Sea Trust, opting for a cash lump sum payout of just over $99 million.

Powerball Back In the Spotlight

It has been a busy week for lottery players in the U.S. after an astonishing Mega Millions jackpot of $1.53 billion was won by a player from Simpsonville, South Carolina. While the jackpot was estimated at $1.6 billion prior to the draw, it was adjusted to its final amount after total ticket sales were calculated afterwards. It means that the Powerball jackpot of $1.58 billion that was shared by three tickets in January 2016 is still the biggest ever to be offered anywhere in the world.

The hysteria surrounding Mega Millions means that the latest Powerball jackpot has gone somewhat under the radar, despite it growing to its third-biggest ever total. It sat at $602 million for Wednesday’s draw, and increased by just under $150 million after it was not won yet again. This is actually a relatively small increase considering the size of the jackpot, showing that Mega Millions has had a significant effect.

Compare this increase to draws leading up to the record $1.58 billion jackpot from 2016, for example, and you can see the difference. For the draw on January 6th 2016, the jackpot stood at $524 million and rolled over to $949 million for the following draw on January 9th. That’s an increase of over $400 million, far in excess of the growth we have just seen in this week’s Powerball jackpot.

Now that the Mega Millions jackpot has been won, expect normal service to be resumed now that players are turning their attention back to Powerball. If it is not won in Saturday’s draw, there is a good chance that the jackpot will reach that incredible $1 billion mark again. After that, it might only take one more rollover to reach world record levels.
