Maryland Player To Keep Promise To Daughter After Big Powerball Win

A man from Hurlock, Maryland, has vowed to finally give his daughter the wedding present she deserves after he landed a massive Powerball prize. It is one of two financial goals that the lucky truck driver is determined to achieve now that he is $50,000 richer.

The 65-year-old matched four main numbers plus the Powerball in the drawing on August 11th, and was in high spirits when he came in to collect his money. He decided to remain anonymous but asked for the check to be made out to ‘Keep on Truckin’, in honour of his profession.

He plans to pay off the loan on his pickup truck with some of his new-found wealth, as well as keeping a promise he made to his daughter on her wedding day 12 years ago. He said at the time that he did not have enough money to give her a present which he considered to be fitting of the occasion, but he plans to make up for that now. “She said, ‘Don’t worry about it, Daddy,’” the winner recalled. “She’s a wonderful girl.”

‘Sanford and Son Moment’

The lucky player found out about his big win when he was at Mike’s Corner Store on 163 Main Street in Preston. He was buying tickets for an upcoming draw, and checking some old entries, when he realized just how much he had won.

“It was like ‘Sanford and Son.’ I grabbed my heart like I was having a heart attack!” said the trucker, in reference to the popular 1970s TV show. Speaking about his enthusiasm for lottery games, the winner, who also likes to play scratch-offs and daily draw games, added: “I don’t drink very often. I don’t smoke. It’s a little hobby I enjoy.”

Powerball Jackpot Pushes Past $100 Million

A New Yorker won the Powerball jackpot of $245.6 million in the same drawing that the man from Maryland landed $50,000, but the top prize has not been won since and is already back above $100 million.

The winning numbers on Wednesday September 5th were 6, 15, 50, 59 and 60, with Powerball 13. There were 529,015 prize winners, and you can view a full list of the payouts on the Powerball Numbers page. The jackpot for Saturday’s drawing will be worth $114 million.
